Ancestors of Jesse and Brett
Elias Hall The fallowing was copied from a family Tree on Rootsweb: Elias was a justice of the peace and had a small retail business on Defeated Cr. off Linefork Cr., Letcher Co., Kentucky(Perry County at that time). He also kept a diary in which he noted events of interest to himself such as: went fishing today. had visit from .... today. it has been very dry this summer., etc. His diary also contained births and deaths with notes at times. While he was literate, his wife was not. He owned a great deal of land for he sold a single parcel of 1700 acres at one time. Either he or his wife was part Cherokee probably his wife since her name was Early. He also had extensive apple orchards and made and sold apple cider and distilled the fermented apple cider and sold it: Eli's Apple Jack. I would imagine that he also made corn liquor as well as apple brandy. Apparently, he wasn't paying taxes on his alcoholic products, for there is a notation in his diary that the marshals cut his still up January 11, 1881. There were so many apples on his trees that the apples were used to feed swine as well as for cider and brandy. He made a note in his diary that there was an earth quake in 1861 which shook the earth for a minute and cracked the joints in the house. He writes that there was on Mar 22, 1877 at about noon a roaring in the sky resembling thunder but there wasn't a cloud to be seen. On January 7, 1863, there was a fire ball which crossed the sky and left a trail which lasted for some time(a meteorite?)

Elias doesn't show up in the 1840 census but does in the 1850 census. He was in Kentucky in 1833 for his daughter Hannah was born in Kentucky but I have been unable to determine where. He received two land grants for land on Line Fork, Ky River on 4-5-1844 one for 900 acres and one for 600 acres. Next, he received a grant for 2500 acres on Defeated creek on 12-3-1846. He received another 2500 acres on Defeated Creek on 12-21-1846. On 3-25-1861 he received another 200 acres on Big Leatherwood. On 3-26-1861, he was granted another 175 acres on Big Leatherwood. On 7-17-1865, he received 200 acres on Big Leatherwood. On 4-22-1873, he received three parcels on Linefork at 200, 200 and 100 acres for a total of 500 acres on 4-22-1873. This is a total of 7,575 acres of land grants. Apparently, his home was located on one of the 2500 acre plots on the upper end of Defeated Creek. That would have put his home building efforts there around 1847.

The 1850 census lists Eli as owning 2500 acres. Possibly, he didn't pay for the other 2500 acre parcel or then again he may have sold it off before 1850. Or it could have been a double entry of a single parcel of land.

A female child Rocksanna age 8 shows up in the 1870 census as being in the Hall household but is apparently a grandchild or some other relation. Eli received a letter from Preston Earley in James Fork, Arkansas to Uncle Eli Hall and family on July 23, 1876.3

He was born on 27 November 1808.2 He was the son of William Hall and Sarah (?).2 Elias Hall married (Mary) Polly Early, daughter of (?) Early, circa 1831 at Kentucky.1 Elias Hall and (Mary) Polly Early appeared on the census of 11 September 1850 at District 2, Perry County, Kentucky.4 Elias Hall and (Mary) Polly Early appeared on the census of 11 July 1860 at Perry County, Kentucky.5 Elias Hall and (Mary) Polly Early appeared on the census of 9 August 1870 at Precinct 7, Letcher County, Kentucky.6 Elias Hall and (Mary) Polly Early appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 at Lane Fork, Letcher County, Kentucky.7 Elias Hall died on 15 January 1887 at Defeated Creek, Linefork, Letcher County, Kentucky.2
